Every wedding celebration is unique for many reasons. Sometimes it’s because the couples select a unique color palette. Sometimes it’s because of the venue. And sometimes it’s because of the celebration’s season!
The season in which you get married can play a surprising role in your wedding day. It can affect the weather, the landscape, and even the amount of sun shining on your celebration.
No matter if you get married in the winter, spring, summer, or fall, each season can help you create a wedding celebrate truly unique to you! Below are a few important tips to consider when planning your wedding in any season:
I personally think that winter weddings are gorgeous! And yet it’s the least popular season to plan a wedding. But what is more romantic than snow falling on the ground, a mug of (spiked) hot cocoa in your hands, and beautiful wintry florals surrounding you? One of the reasons winter weddings can be a bit trickier to plan (besides the weather!) is because of sunlight. Read on:
Generally, the sun sets between 5:00pm – 6:30pm in the winter. It’s important to take this into consideration because you’ll likely want to use natural (sun) light for your portraits! This typically isn’t a problem if you’re having a late afternoon wedding. However, if you’re planning on having a late evening wedding, you may have a bit of down time from 5pm until the start of your ceremony.
Winter is my favorite season to play with metallics and rich gem tones like emerald green, sapphire blue, or ruby red. These romantic palettes will warm even the coldest of days!
Spring weddings are wonderful because they symbolize new beginnings, just like your wedding! These months are usually the perfect temperature for outdoor soirees. And what’s more romantic than celebrating your this new chapter in your life surrounded by spring’s new blooms?
Generally, the sun sets between 7:30pm – 8:30pm in the spring. (Thank you, Daylight Savings!) This gives you plenty of time to capture wedding portraits pretty much any time of day!
For spring, consider fresh pastel color combinations (mints, peach, baby blue, dusty rose, etc.) that complement the season’s delicate foliage and first blooms.
Summer weddings are amazing! I love that there is so much daylight! The one downside to a summer wedding, however, is the heat. Summer weddings – especially ones in Kansas City – can be hot. To help beat the heat, try to schedule your wedding portraits as late in the day as possible. Midday sunlight is not only the least flattering, but it’s the very hottest!
Generally, the sun sets between 7:30pm – 9:00pm in the summer. Because the sun sets so late, you’ll want to consider taking a few minutes to slip out of the reception to capture sunset portraits! You will NOT regret this! This is the absolute best light of the day and you’re going to want to have portraits during this time. Usually these portraits happen during dinner or open dancing so no one even notices that you’re gone for a few minutes.
Summer packs a vibrant colorful punch, welcoming (literally) any color palette under the sun! I recommend choosing colors that complement/contrast with summer’s bright green foliage. Dusty blue and rose quartz are personal favorites!
I love fall’s temperature and the colors! Most couples choose a fall wedding because they love the color of the foliage. If you’re worried about timing your wedding just right to enjoy peak foliage, well, don’t! All you need is one tree with some color in order to make it look like fall. A little bit of color can go a long way!!
Generally, the sun sets between 6:00 pm – 7:30pm in the fall. Much like spring, this means you have lots of flexibility when scheduling your wedding portraits!
Fall’s vibrant foliage makes couples want to choose warmer color palettes like reds, oranges, and yellows. However, I recommend not trying to blend in with fall’s beautiful foliage. Instead, pick colors that POP against this gorgeous backdrop, such as blues and neutrals!
No matter which season you choose for your wedding celebration, you’re bound to have a beautiful, meaningful day that’s true to you!
